CBD Benefits for Dogs
Did you know CBD can help relieve and manage conditions such as:
Cancer Pain, Are anti-inflammatory, Arthritis in Dogs, Loss of Appetite/Stimulate Appetite, Reduce Anxiety, Help control seizures and are even being used to treat Aggressive behavior.
What is CBD Oil?
CBD Oil is cannabidiol - which is a compound found in cannabis and hemp. Tetrahydrocannabinol, commonly known as THC, can also be found in cannabis. THC is the compound that gives marijuana its psychoactive properties. Most CBD oils are made only with cannabidiol and not the psychoactive THC. And they typically are made from hemp, not marijuana. Bottom line here, your dog won’t get “high” from CBD oil! In fact, he’ll get the relaxation without the intoxication.
One of the most exciting benefits of CBD oils is their ability to help fight cancer. Did you know one out of 10 dogs will be diagnosed with some form of cancer? Early detective and treatment can result in longer healthier lives. Research shows that CBD oil and other substances found in hemp an cannabis actually have anti-tumor effects and has even been show to stop cancer cells from growing and increase the death of tumor cell rate. In other words - all good signs for holistic medical benefits.
CBD Oil helps our own immune system killer cells to identify and attack cancer cells by blocking their ability to produce energy. CBD oil also has anti-tumor properties that help to slow and inhibit glioma cell growth and also can help increase the efficacy of conventional cancer treatments.Oils are being used to treat inflammation and auto-immune disease thru their ability to decrease the production and release of inflammatory cytokines. These can cause allergies, hypersensitivities and auto-immunity.
CBD can also suppress TH17 cells. Functionally, TH17 cells play a role in host defense against extracellular pathogens by mediating the recruitment of neutrophils and macrophages to infected tissues. Moreover, it has become evident that aberrant regulation of TH17 cells may play a significant role in the pathogenesis of multiple inflammatory and autoimmune disorders.
Dr. Edward Bassingthwaighte, is an Australian Holistic Veterinarian. He is using CBD Oils in his practice in addition to other herbal medicines and has experienced real success when he treated dogs with tumors with Cannabis oil.
In one of his cases, Dr. Bassingthwaighte, regarding treatment of a dog with a tumor the size of approximately 6cm in diameter, located in the mammary gland of the dog, it took the tumor about 6 months to shrink without any recurrence.
Arthritis in dogs are also being treated with CBD Oils. As dogs (and people!) age, arthritis can be quite common. Changes in personality can accompany pain from stiff joints and you may notice your dog limping as well or having a harder time getting up and down. Traditionally Vets have used non-steroidal medications (NSAID). Unfortunately, NSAID drugs can actually cause further deterioration of joints. CBD Oils are helping to reduce inflammation around joints and provide a natural option.
Dogs can also benefit from the use of CBD oils for the treatment of loss of appetite or to stimulate appetite. CBD actually works by interacting with the bodies endocannabionoid system (ECS) This is a system that helps to maintain the natural balance in the body, known as homeostasis. ECS also regulates pain, inflammation and appetite.
CBD Oils are also being using to treat seizures in dogs. Marijuana has a rich history as a medicine used to reduce seizures and convulsions going back thousands of years. CBD Oils have been known to reduce the number and the severity of seizures not only in humans but in dogs. CBD along with THC can prevent further serious brain injury during seizures and shorten the recovery period following a seizure.
Some pet owners are also used CBD oils to help with anxiety and aggression with mostly testimonials from pet owners vs actual anecdotal evidence backing it up.
The good news is there are Clinical trials underway by Dr. Stephanie McGrath of Colorado State University who is leading a study on the use of cannabidiol (CBD) for the treatment of osteoarthritis and epilepsy in dogs. Soon we will have additional research and case studies to back up what pet owners have been reporting.
